Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art organises exhibitions of cutting-edge contemporary art, both for its main location in the former town hall of Middelburg on the central market square as well as for its nomadic program in other places.

Vleeshal’s main location is characterized by a stunning late Gothic architecture, which has inspired many artists since the 1970s to create site specific exhibitions. Under the directorship of the current director Roos Gortzak, artists such as Cally Spooner, Ola Vasiljeva, Marina Pinsky, Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and Paul Maheke have developed new works.

In its program Vleeshal focuses on the relations between current developments in contemporary art and the early exhibitions in Vleeshal from the 1970s – when experimental forms of music, dance, fine arts and performance were brought together in new and interesting ways. Performance and performativity in contemporary art have played an important role in the programming of the last few years.

In 2015 Vleeshal kicked off its nomadic program as an extension of its existing exhibition and public program in Middelburg. Since then, Vleeshal has collaborated with Art Rotterdam, Spring Performance Festival and POPPOSITIONS, to name a few, where performances and works by Oceans Academy of Arts (OAOA), Les Trucs, Simone Forti and Andreas Arndt were shown.
